Archery Bow Hunting - 25 Tips To Remember

The archery bow hunting 25 tips to remember is a compilation of both my personal experience and that of friends. Trying to hunt wildlife with string and sticks brings upon new and head scratching challenges unseen by gun hunters. By applying these simple tips hopefully, this season will be a greater success!

  • Practice shooting your broad heads before going into the field
  • Practice shooting with your exact hunting gear on
  • Practice shooting from a tree stand
  • Practice shooting from inside a blind
  • Practice shooting at a 3D target of the game you intend to hunt. (There is a big difference in the sight picture of a sight pin on piece of paper vs. the vitals of a trophy animal)
  • Practice shooting from a kneeling position or from behind a tree
  • Practice shooting both uphill and downhill
  • Put a touch of super glue or fletching glue on the front of all fletchings
  • Inspect the trueness (straightness) of the arrows before shooting
  • Know your maximum effective range of consistently shooting 6-8 inch groups
  • Use the same range finder during practice sessions as will be used in the woods
  • Practice shooting with the wind in your face, behind back and over each side of your body to truly understand how the wind affects your arrow's flight path
  • Inspect the integrity of the D loop before entering the woods
  • Mark the placement of your sight pins on the frame of your sight with white out or other marking material to ensure your pins have not moved
  • Always carry an allen wrench incase your sight pins get bumped or moved in transit
  • Carry a spare release incase you find yourself in the tree with your release sitting on the bumper of the truck (Not that I am speaking from experience here! LOL)
  • Properly range visible land marks after getting settled into the stand or blind
  • Always wear hunting gloves when climbing the ladder stand so you don’t leave a screaming scent telling the game, I’m right up here!
  • Wear rubber or scent containment boots when entering the woods
  • Ensure your hunting pants are tucked into the tops of the rubber or scent containment boots

  • When using natural deer scents (ie. Doe-N-heat or Buck Bombs) make sure you keep the scent at 15 to 20 yards from the stand (I had a great idea of dropping scent all the way to the base of my tree only to have a 12 point Iowa deer directly under my stand and I could not even get a shot)
  • Make sure to wear the safety harness when attempting to get settled in the tree stand
  • Ensure your arrow is properly nocked immediately after you sat down in the blind or stand
  • Use a bow stand for ground blind hunting as it greatly reduces the movement when reaching for the bow
